How much personal injury protection do you need?

If you live in a no-fault insurance state, you're required to carry a minimum amount of PIP coverage. In some states, you can choose to buy more than the minimum coverage, so you and your passengers receive more reimbursement for medical expenses and lost wages after an accident. Selecting the right amount of PIP coverage often depends on how you're covered by your health insurance plan.

Do you need personal injury protection?

There are currently 15 states that mandate PIP coverage, according to Experian. In a handful of other states, PIP coverage is available but not required. Our car insurance calculator will let you know if PIP coverage is required in your state.

How do you figure out how much personal injury protection you need?

If you have a good health insurance plan, then you may find your state's minimum PIP limits adequate. But keep in mind that PIP may cover additional post-accident expenses, such as lost wages or in-home care (coverage varies by state). Choosing a higher PIP limit (or a lower PIP deductible, if applicable) would cover more of these related expenses.

If you have little or no health insurance coverage, then choosing PIP coverage with higher limits or a lower deductible can help cover your out-of-pocket medical expenses resulting from a car accident. It may also help cover your lost wages if you must miss work. Additionally, if you don't have life insurance, PIP may pay for funeral costs and other expenses up to your policy's limits.

Important note: PIP typically applies before your health insurance. That means if you're injured in a car accident, your auto policy's PIP coverage may apply to your medical expenses first and your health insurance may pay for the remainder of your expenses.
